Welcome to the 2026-27 school year!!


The English II class will consist of reading many different types of text, including exposure to all types of literature. During both semesters, we will be using literary concepts to analyze these works. We will be incorporating composition as we go through the year. We will be focusing on making connections, different types of writing structure, and editing with revision of writing for grammar, punctuation, and spelling issues. We will be utilizing different methods, genres and media to enhance the learning process. The English II class includes an emphasis on listening, reading, writing, and thinking across many areas of English, including oral language, vocabulary, self-sustained reading, multiple texts, and multiple genres. This is a BROAD course. It will cover a lot of information and a multitude of texts and concepts. We will also be preparing for the English II STARR exam.


The following is a division of the units for this year.


Unit 1 - 1st Six Weeks:  Foundations of Reading and Writing for Young Scholars

Unit 2 - 2nd Six Weeks:  Literary Texts: Analysis and Composition

Unit 3 - 3rd  Six Weeks:  Informative Texts:  Analysis and Composition

Unit 4 - 4th  Six Weeks:  Argumentative Texts:  Rhetorical Analysis and Composition

Unit 5 - 5th  Six Weeks:  Finding Connections across Literary, Informational, and Argumentative Texts

Unit 6 - 6th  Six Weeks:  Producing a Multi-Genre, Multimodal Product based on Research

Includes 1 Book Talk/Reflection and 2 unit-based major projects or essays.



Independent Reading Expectations:

  • Students will select an independent novel to read each six weeks (except when we read a novel as a  class).
      • Every Monday and Wednesday, we will read silently for the first 10 minutes of class.
      • At the end of the Six Weeks, students must complete:
      • A Reflection Worksheet
      • A Book Talk with Mrs. Pursley

 

Expectations/Rules:

A – Always follow school rules
  1. Students should be familiar with the policies laid out in the TISD handbook. 
  2. In particular, students should be aware that dress code is to be followed, there is no food or drink allowed in the classroom, and NO CELL PHONES (IT IS THE LAW in Texas) Cell phones will be confiscated if seen in class.
B – Be respectful at all times.
      1. Students should always be respectful to their peers and teachers, and should avoid belittling themselves or others.
      2. Students should take care of school property.
C – Come to class prepared to work.
    1. Students need to have supplies ready for class when the bell rings.
    2. Students should come to class with a good attitude and a willing spirit, ready to learn. A smile is always nice as well!
    3. Students need to have completed homework assignments ready to turn in at the beginning of their class period on the day they are due. 

      Late Work Policy: Scoring will begin at the following:                                              

  1. One day late – 80 (20 points deducted)
  2. Two days late – 60 (40 points deducted)
  3. Three days late – 40 (60 points deducted)
                                        NO LATE WORK WILL BE ACCEPTED AFTER THE THIRD DAY. 
D – Don’t waste class time.
    1. Time in class is limited, therefore students must be willing to focus. 
    2. Students need to stay on task and not be a distraction to others.

 

AI Generated Work

AI tools (e.g., ChatGPT, Quillbot) may not be used to complete assignments.  All work must be original and written by you.

Violations = zero  + parent contact

 

For classroom disruptions, the discipline that will occur is outlined below.

 

Classroom Steps and Consequences:

  1. Four Questions/Warning
  2. Reflection Paper
  3. Parent Contact
  4. Teacher-Assigned Detention/Parent Contact
  5. Office Referral

 

Certain violations require an office referral, removal from class, and/or parent contact on the first infraction. This is to be determined by the teacher.

 

Absences:

  • If you have an extended illness that requires you to miss multiple days of school, we will create a schedule to help you get the work completed once you are better.
  • A student who is absent will have one day per day absent to complete work. For example, if you are absent for two days, then you have two days to get any work turned in. After the second day, it would be considered late and will revert back to the Late Work Policy scoring. 
  • Absences due to activities (athletics, band, StuCo, etc.) require students to see the teacher BEFORE they are absent. This must be followed.
